Dr. Andrea Sealy attended Harrison College from 1987-1994. During her time at that institution, she represented the school in track events and was an active Girl Guide, earning her Queen’s Guide Award in 1992.
After graduating from Harrison College and spending a year at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, she went on to Jackson State University (JSU) on a track scholarship. At Jackson State she continued an academic excellence track as a W.E.B. Du Bois Honors College student and Office of Naval Research Fellow. She was also the recipient of numerous awards for academic achievement including the Athletics Department Student Athlete of the Year, Dean’s List, President’s List, National Dean’s List, All American Scholar and Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. She was also inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta, Alpha Kappa Mu, Phi Kappa Phi and Alpha Chi National Honor Societies. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from JSU.
She earned a Master of Science in Meteorology from The Pennsylvania State University where she was inducted into the Chi Epsilon Pi Meteorology Honor Society. Subsequently she earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Atmospheric Sciences from Howard University where she was the recipient of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Earth System Science and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Training Fellowships. She then went on to the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado as an Advanced Study Program Postdoctoral Fellow.
Dr. Sealy is a currently a Meteorologist at the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) and lectures in Meteorology at both the CIMH and the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus. She is the Chair of the Pan-American Regional Steering Group of the World Meteorological Organization Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System (WMO SDS-WAS), a member of the WMO SDS-WAS global steering committee, a founding member of the Caribbean Aerosol-Health Network and coordinates the CIMH Dust and Air Quality Forecasting Centre.
Dr. Sealy is President of the Barbados chapter of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences, a member of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and the American Geophysical Union (AGU). Her other professional activities include being a member of the Barbados National Ozone Steering Committee and the UWI Cave Hill Faculty of Science and Technology Sub-committee for Postgraduate Studies. She is also Faculty Advisor for the UWI Cave Hill Meteorology Society and Supervisor/Advisor to a number of Ph.D. and MPhil students in Meteorology and Environmental Studies.
She also coordinates various public outreach initiatives of the CIMH including the annual Weather and Water Summer Camp for secondary school students and involvement in career presentations. For her work at the CIMH and the UWI Cave Hill Campus, she has received the CIMH Employee of the Year Award (Academic Staff) and the inaugural UWI Cave Hill Campus Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL)/Guild Teaching Award. In addition, Dr. Sealy is the Vice President of the Barbados Workers’ Union Division at the CIMH.
Outside of her professional life, she is active in the community as a member of the Girl Guides Association of Barbados (GGAB) where she currently serves as Ranger Advisor and represents the GGAB on the National Award Council for the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Barbados. She is also a Guider of 150th Barbados Ranger Guide Unit based at the St. Philip’s Parish Church where she worships, was a former Sunday School teacher and former Youth Leader, a member of the Kerygma Bible Study Group, a member of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) team, assists with the Deacon’s Cupboard Ministry Christmas outreach and is a member of the Barbados Anglican Cursillo movement.
