JTF Compost
Last term the KEYS Learning Programme introduced a Sustainable Development module. Given the impact of Covid-19, we focused extensively on food security and the importance of ensuring access to safe and nutritious food, especially in times of crisis. For one of the term projects, students created their own compost bins. This term, the compost is now being used for their planting projects. We linked these projects to SDG 1. No Poverty, 2. Zero Hunger, 3. Good Health and Well-Being, 4. Quality Education, 8. Decent Work and Economic Growth, 9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, 12. Responsible Consumption and Production and 13. Climate Action; to expand their knowledge of the role they can play to positively impact their environment.
Ten year old Barbadian student, Jaron Forde showed tremendous passion and aptitude, and expressed interest in starting a composting business. KEYS secured BBD $600 startup funding and small business development assistance to help Jaron realise his dream and JTF Compost was born. JTF Compost will offer a variety of soil enhancement products derived from plant waste and sargassum seaweed.
